Gruta do Lago Azul

Gruta do Lago Azul (Blue Lake Cave) in Bonito, Brazil has a depth of nearly 100 meters. At the bottom lies what appears to be a bright blue lake, but it is in fact an underground river that flows through a series of interconnecting subterranean caves. A relatively recent dive uncovered fossils from sabre tooth tiger! The picture on the right shows a giant and rather unusual stalagmite formation.

A Dirt Road

A dirt road leading back to the small tourist town of Bonito, Brazil. The long and bumpy drive through seemingly endless farmland brought me to Gruta do Lago Azul (Blue Lake Cave), which will be featured soon on this blog.

Shadows Beneath the Moon

As I climbed up a hill after sunset I could see these dark silhouettes reaching up toward the crescent moon.

An Innocent Cup

This cup doesn't look very out of place here in the grass surrounded by cigarette butts. A rich, creamy chocolate frosty finished and discarded, no thought in the world. No contemplation or consideration from the person who once enjoyed what was delivered in the plastic cup, and, seemingly no reflection from any passerby. Usually a cup like this spends it's days in the wild blowing from location to location completely unbothered by any.

Unfortunately, that was not the fate of this cup...

This is a picture of that very same rich in quality frosty cup that we met earlier. But wait! Is that...? Yes, it is a squirrel with its head stuck in an ironically smiling desert cup. I saw this today and even though the onlookers laughed as he jumped frantically in the air and Wendy's face maintained it's freckled smile, the squirrel was in a desperate and terrifying battle for his life. After he leaped into the overgrown brush at the edge of the clearing people decided that the show was over and went on with the rest of their day, off to tell the story of the crazy squirrel with an odd looking hat.

Sadly, I am not shocked by what happened and I doubt that you are either. I am not angry or bitter about witnessing this and what it means for our society. I only feel sad for those that do not deem it worth their time to help another because it is one of the greatest things we can do in our day to day lives.

As for the squirrel, I can joyfully assure you that this was not his last adventure.

The Falling Sun

Lake Ontario, home to what some say is the second best sunset in the world. On this windy day the seagulls glided seemingly motionless above the cresting waves.

Hungry

It was just good timing to get the photo of this big Australian saltwater crocodile about to launch itself out of the water in hot pursuit of an afternoon snack.

A Bird of Figs

The Australasian Figbird, while strikingly colored in yellow and red, was nevertheless hard to glimpse through the thick green sclerophyllous leaves of the Australian bush. As I walked to class at James Cook University in Townsville, Australia I was captivated by the sound of a bird call and couldn't resist the chance to find the source. Luckily, I was able to find this male sitting on a branch calling out, possibly to a prospective mate.

Rainbows in a Tree

Two Red-and-Green Macaws, likely a monogamous breeding pair, spending some time preening in a tree. I spotted these beautiful rainbows while visiting a small watering hole in the Pantanal region of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil during the dry season. The dwindling body of water laying beneath the sweltering sun was a magnet for thirsty animals. Besides the pair above, I enjoyed the company of a coati, a perturbed mother bison and her calf, and a tuiuiu (the state bird that stands almost as tall as you).
